What If We’ve Been Learning Foreign Languages the Wrong Way?

Rethinking Language Learning: Become Independent, Confident, and Learn Any Language You Want

What if the biggest obstacle to learning a foreign language isn’t your talent, your age, or your memory—but the way you’ve been learning all along?

Hi, I’m Sven Frank.

For many years, I’ve been exploring how people can learn foreign languages as effectively as possible. I’ve studied different learning methods, gained valuable insights through my own experiences, and used everything I’ve discovered to develop the Speedlearning Method.

Along the way, I’ve come to one fundamental conclusion:

We need to stop simply teaching people foreign languages. Instead, we should teach them how to learn any language independently.

Because once you understand how language learning really works, you no longer need a new teacher, another language course, or years of classroom instruction every time you want to learn a new language.

The Problem: We Learn Languages, but We Don’t Learn How to Learn Them

Traditional language teaching often follows a familiar pattern:

We memorize vocabulary, study grammar rules, translate texts, and complete exercises. We accumulate knowledge about a language, hoping that one day we’ll be able to use that knowledge in a real conversation.

But that’s exactly where the problem lies.

Knowing a language and being able to speak it are two entirely different skills.

Many adults have spent years learning a foreign language, yet they still feel insecure when they have to speak spontaneously.

Not necessarily because they don’t know enough, but because they haven’t had enough practice putting their knowledge into action.

My Approach: Communicate First, Then Understand How It Works

Instead of starting by memorizing abstract grammar rules, participants engage in meaningful, real-life conversations. They learn how to express themselves, ask questions, formulate responses, and use the vocabulary they already know in flexible and creative ways.

Grammar is by no means neglected.

Quite the opposite: It is introduced precisely when it is needed for effective communication.

You don’t just learn grammar to understand it. You learn to use it automatically when you speak.

The goal is not to be able to explain as many grammar rules as possible, but to communicate with increasing fluency, confidence, and accuracy.

From Language Student to Independent Language Learner

I want to equip adults with the tools they need to take responsibility for their own learning journey.

This means understanding:

  • how to remember new words and expressions for the long term,

  • how to have meaningful conversations even with a limited vocabulary,

  • how to learn grammar effectively, focusing on what you actually need,

  • how to develop confidence and a natural feel for the language through active speaking practice,

  • how to assess your own progress and adjust your training accordingly,

  • and how to transfer these skills to any other foreign language you want to learn.

Does This Mean Grammar and Language Teachers Are No Longer Necessary?

No. Quite the opposite.

Grammar matters. Accuracy matters. And good language teachers can make an enormous difference in the learning process.

But I firmly believe that we need to redefine their role.

A good language coach should do more than simply pass on knowledge. They should empower learners to become increasingly independent of their guidance.

Rather than constantly directing the learning process, they should show participants how to shape and manage their own learning journey.

The true measure of a language coach’s success is not how long their students need them, but how independent those students eventually become.

Don’t Just Learn a Language. Learn How to Learn Languages

Imagine you want to learn Italian after mastering English. Later, perhaps Swedish, Croatian, or Japanese.

Do you really have to start from scratch every single time and go through an entirely new learning process?

Not if you’ve already learned how to use your memory effectively, recognize language patterns, actively recall new vocabulary, and systematically develop your speaking skills.

Of course, every language comes with its own unique challenges. But the fundamental skills of a successful language learner can be applied again and again.

And that’s exactly what I teach through the Speedlearning Method.

My goal is not to keep you dependent on language courses forever. My goal is to help you reach a point where you no longer need them.

Your Journey to Language Independence Starts Here

If you’ve always believed that you’re too old, not gifted enough, or simply don’t have a talent for learning foreign languages, I’d like to encourage you to take a fresh look at your past learning experiences.

Maybe you don’t need more lessons.

Maybe you just need a different approach.

Discover how the Speedlearning Method can help you learn more effectively, speak with greater confidence, and become an independent language learner, step by step.

Because the most important thing isn’t the next foreign language you learn. It’s developing the ability to learn any language independently.
